UN Appoints New Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen amid Worsening Crisis

BAGHDAD - The United Nations has appointed Jordanian national Samer Abduljaber as its new Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, as the country continues to face a protracted conflict and growing humanitarian needs.

Abduljaber took up his post on November 1 following a decision by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and with the approval of Yemen’s internationally recognised Presidential Leadership Council, based in Aden.

He will lead and coordinate the UN’s development and humanitarian activities across the country, overseeing the organisation’s response to the escalating needs of a population affected by years of conflict.

According to a UN statement, Abduljaber brings more than 20 years of experience in managing humanitarian operations and emergency responses in conflict-affected and crisis-hit environments.

Before his appointment, he served as Regional Director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe at the World Food Programme (WFP). He previously held the positions of Director of the Office of the WFP Deputy Executive Director and Director of Emergencies at the agency’s headquarters.

His appointment comes as Yemen remains one of the world's most severe humanitarian emergencies, with the UN continuing to coordinate international assistance amid persistent insecurity, displacement and deteriorating living conditions.
