Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi met with Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev in Moscow on the sidelines of the third Russia-Africa Summit to discuss progress on the El Dabaa nuclear power plant, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.
The two officials reviewed the project's implementation and progress across its various stages. Sisi expressed appreciation for the ongoing cooperation between Egypt and the Russian state nuclear corporation, stressing the importance of completing construction according to the established timetable. He also highlighted the plant's role in diversifying Egypt's energy mix and meeting the country's growing electricity demand.
Likhachev reaffirmed Rosatom's commitment to delivering the project and expressed appreciation for the cooperation with Egyptian authorities and the support provided during construction. He also outlined the progress achieved to date.
Located on Egypt's Mediterranean coast in Matrouh Governorate, El Dabaa is the country's first nuclear power plant. The facility will comprise four Russian-designed reactors, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, bringing total installed capacity to 4,800 megawatts. The first reactor is expected to enter operation in 2028.
Egypt and Russia signed the intergovernmental agreement underpinning the project in November 2015, while the construction contracts entered into force in December 2017. In September, Egyptian and Russian officials reviewed preparations for the delivery of nuclear fuel, scheduled for 2027. In July, Egypt installed the second reactor pressure vessel for the plant's second unit, marking another milestone in construction.
The project is a central component of Egypt's efforts to diversify its electricity generation sources and strengthen long-term energy security, while deepening strategic and technological cooperation with Russia.
